What is a BMI?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a numerical value calculated from a person's height and weight, used as a general indicator of body fatness and health risk. It is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in metres.

While BMI is a widely used screening tool, it has limitations — it does not account for factors such as muscle mass, age, sex, or fat distribution, meaning it may not accurately reflect the health of athletes, the elderly, or certain ethnicities. It is best used as a starting point rather than a definitive measure of health.

The Ranges of BMI

BMI is grouped into several categories to help assess a person's health risk:

Severely Underweight Below 16
Underweight 16 to 18.4
Normal Weight 18.5 to 24.9
Overweight 25 to 29.9
Obese Class 1 30 to 34.9
Obese Class 2 35 to 39.9
Obese Class 3 40 and above

These ranges serve as general guidelines and should be interpreted alongside other health indicators for a full picture of a person's wellbeing.
